I don’t remember her name. I think it was Nicole but that could be from the jumble of women’s names in my head. I was doing a shoot for a band in a basement. I don’t recall who owned the house. She may have been the girlfriend of one of the band members and was helping with makeup. We talked briefly and I asked her to stand in so I could test the lights. This is one of those photos. She was cool. @samsanchezphoto

An IG photographer friend recently commented on how he and his model casually shoot in a relaxed environment to make the photos. His quote, “Just a couple of creatives working towards a goal” stuck with me. I try to do that with every model I work with but on the rarest of rare occasions something rare happens: you become friends with the model. For me, that means getting a bite after a shoot or meeting up when they’re in town just to catch up on things. I made some of my best portraits just shooting candids or selfies during our visits. This is one such photo. We had just finished shooting Lucy and had worked through the dinner hour. We were tired and hungry. We found a place that was still open and serving. The only table we could get was in the patio. That’s where I made this firelight portrait while we waited for our food. @samsanchezphoto
