TONE CONTROL

We shot this at sunrise which is a big deal because I hate getting up early. We were also shooting outside, something I don’t normally do. We found this shed and I thought it looked cool with the early sun on it. I liked the warm tones. I don’t remember what we we’re talking about but Carina let out a big laugh. Carina is a very genuine person and this photo captures that authenticity. She makes the best facial expressions. Recently, we were talking about the stories I write about my photos and how they’re always positive. She said just once she would love to see a negative story. So I came up with this alternate copy for this photo:

“Carina barely scored a foul ball with this one. Her minimal effort into her craft really shows. I only shot her out of pity. It’s either her or a picture of a rock or a tree. I’m not sure which is worse.”

How ’bout dat?

GISELLE 0525

This was actually part of a wardrobe test for a film. Giselle is not a model but she could easily be one. She’s a musician and plays piano and guitar. She has this Breedlove acoustic/electric with a prominent midrange bump. In the studio, it took some time to find the right mic and the right position to even out the tone. I realize that has nothing to do the photo but why leave it out? This was shot with one light. Unfortunately, we never worked together again. Maybe I should look her up for another shoot?  @samsanchezphoto

CENTERPIECE

This was a difficult edit. Difficult because I had to decide if I wanted a monochrome or color image. Color was the first choice because of the seductive warm tone of Mackenzie and the table. The vineyard in the windows had some green and added a small pop of color. After that edit, I decided that was boring. The monochrome edit was problematic for I had to find a balance between the contrasty tone I prefer and the detail I wanted to preserve in the table. Regardless of all the editing angst, it’s Mackenzie and her beautiful face that make the photo work. It’s all her. @samsanchezphoto
